How to Replace a Blower Motor in a 1998 Buick Regal LS

Blower motors are responsible for helping circulate heat and air conditioning in automobiles. They typically last throughout the life of a car, but they can be run down if they're always run at the highest heat or air conditioning setting. You can repair a blower motor in a 1998 Buick Regal LS in less than an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Black electrical tape
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • White painter's tape
  • Replacement blower motor

Removing the Blower Motor

  • Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal. To identify the proper cable, look for a negative ("-") sign. Using the black tape, completely wrap the metal portion of the disconnected cable. Make sure that when you put the cable down, it doesn’t touch any metal surfaces under the hood.

  • Locate the blower motor in your Buick Regal by checking the front passenger side floor area; the blower will be covered by trim. Unscrew the cover using the Phillips screwdriver and place it on the seat along with its screws.

  • Carefully detach all of the wires that are plugged into the blower motor. Label each one with the painter's tape if you think you’ll have trouble remembering where they go.

  • Take out each of the screws that are holding the blower motor in place.

  • Take the blower motor carefully out of the car and set it aside.

Installing the New Blower Motor

  • Inspect the new blower motor to make sure it is not broken in any way. Put both blower motors side by side to make sure they match and that the wiring hookups are the same.

  • Place the new blower motor in the same position as the old one so that it’s ready for securing. Insert and tighten the screws to hold the blower motor in place.

  • Remove any labeling tape that you may have used for the blower motor's wiring hookup. Hook the blower motor's wiring up and secure the trim cover back into position.

  • Take the black tape off of the negative battery cable contact. Reconnect the cable to its battery terminal, start the car and test out your new blower motor.
