How to Repair a Window Chip

As you drive down the road, a small piece of gravel can hit your windshield and leave a chip. No matter how expensive your windshield is, the glass is still susceptible to chips, according to Popular Mechanics. While it may be tempting to leave the chip alone, this can eventually cause a crack that will require full window replacement. To save money, fill the window chip yourself before it gets to that point. You can pick up a windshield crack repair kit at most retailers as well as specialty auto parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Pin
  • Dry cloth
  • Windshield crack repair kit
  • Razor blade
  • Clean out the hole of the window chip with a pin. Dig out any dirt as a clean hole will fill and adhere better than a dirty one. Wipe the surrounding glass with a dry cloth or towel to remove any other dirt. Make sure the glass and window chip are completely dry before moving on.

  • Remove the paper backing on the adhesive strip that came with your windshield repair kit. Place the sticky side on the glass so the window chip is in the exact center of the adhesive strip. Press firmly to ensure that it is stuck to the glass.

  • Peel off the paper backing on the other side of the adhesive strip now stuck to your windshield. Mount the pedestal provided in your kit so it is straight on the adhesive strip and the pedestal is facing straight up. Press around the base of the pedestal to ensure that it sticks securely to the adhesive strip.

  • Remove the plunger of the syringe and add the window chip-filling chemicals provided in the kit. Carefully replace the syringe plunger. Remove the cap of the syringe and you're ready to start filling the hole.

  • Insert the end of the syringe into the pedestal sticking out of the window chip. Press down on the plunger to insert the chemicals into the hole. Pull up the plunger so the syringe fills with air. Press the plunger back down to add more chemicals to the hole. Do this a few times to ensure that the window chip has been completely filled with chemicals. Let sit for 10 minutes.

  • Remove the syringe, pedestal and adhesive backing from the window. You may need a razor blade to remove the adhesive. Use the razor blade to smooth out the surface of the glass to make the newly filled hole the same level as the rest of the glass.
