How to Replace a Camaro O2 Sensor

The O2 sensor (also known as the oxygen sensor) works in conjunction with the engine computer to precisely meter the air/fuel ratio fed into your engine. The O2 sensor measures the amount of unburned oxygen in your Camaro's exhaust. It feeds this information to the computer, which can add more fuel to the engine through the fuel injectors. A faulty O2 sensor can cause your engine to run rich, which results in higher fuel consumption and higher emissions.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Automotive jack
  • Jack stands
  • Flat-blade screwdriver

Removing a Camaro O2 Sensor

  • Allow the exhaust system to cool completely before beginning this repair.

  • Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal. Use a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt and pull the clamp off the terminal.

  • Raise the vehicle using an automotive jack and support with jack stands placed underneath the front subframe.

  • Locate the O2 sensor, which should be found in the exhaust manifold.

  • Disconnect the electrical harness from the O2 sensor. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the retaining tab away from the plastic connector and pull the plastic connectors apart.

  • Unscrew the O2 sensor from the exhaust manifold, using a wrench.

Installing a Camaro O2 Sensor

  • Thread the O2 sensor into the fitting in the exhaust manifold. Tighten using a wrench.

  • Connect the electrical harness to the O2 sensor by pushing the electrical connectors together.

  • Lower the vehicle.

  • Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal. Slide the clamp over the terminal and tighten the retaining bolt, using a wrench.
