How to Replace the Electric Windows in a Pontiac Firebird

The Pontiac Firebird was manufactured with optional electric power windows, and the motor that drives the window regulator can wear out and require replacement. The motor is wired through a switch placed on the center console, and this switch can be vulnerable to spilled drinks or moisture. The average weekend mechanic can replace the window motor on a Firebird in about 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise then placing the terminal away from the battery.

  • Remove the door panel by turning the screw inside the interior door handle molding counterclockwise then working the molding from the panel. Remove the arm rest bolts by turning them counterclockwise. Starting at a corner of the door panel, pull up on the panel and disengage it from the pop rivets that hold it to the metal. Some rivets become brittle with age and may require replacement. Some Firebird models will also have top door panel sections that can be removed by turning the screws counterclockwise. With the panel off, the window regulator and motor are accessible.

  • Remove the window motor by unplugging it from the wiring harness then turning the mount bolts counterclockwise. Pull the motor from the regulator gears and away from the door.

  • Replace the motor by positioning it into the regulator crank gears then turning the mount bolts in a clockwise direction. Reconnect the wiring harness by pushing the adapter plugs together.

  • Replace the door panel by positioning it over the pop rivets and tapping each one firmly to seat it into the metal hole. Some rivets will need guidance with a screwdriver to seat properly. Replace the arm rest bolts and door handle screws in a clockwise direction. Replace the top panel section, if applicable, by turning the screws clockwise.

  • Reconnect the battery by turning the terminal bolt in a clockwise direction into the post hole.
