How to Replace Fuel Injectors in a 1997 Jeep Wrangler

You would not expect a fuel injector on your 1997 Jeep Wrangler to cause so much trouble. But a bad injector can upset fuel distribution, idle, fuel economy, emissions and even engine performance. This may be the result of a worn or broken valve, coil or some other internal component impossible to repair. However, you can fix all these problems at once just by replacing the necessary injector(s).

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Shop rag
  • Small screwdriver
  • Ratchet extension
  • Nose pliers
  • New O-ring seals

Removing the Fuel Injectors

  • Disconnect the black battery cable using a wrench. Remove the air intake tube from the assembly, if necessary, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Take the fuel filler cap off. Remove the cover from the fuel supply manifold using a ratchet and socket.

  • Make sure the engine is completely cool. Remove the black cap from the fuel pressure test port and wrap a shop rag around the valve. The test port is similar to a tire air valve and is located on the fuel rail near the fuel injectors.

  • Depress the valve stem with a small screwdriver as you catch the squirt of fuel with the rag. Then replace the black cap on the fuel-pressure test port.

  • Remove the accelerator cable, cruise control cable (if equipped), transmission cable (if equipped) and cable routing brackets, if you have a 2.5L or 4.0L engine model. Use a Phillips screwdriver and a ratchet and socket.

  • Unplug the fuel injectors you want to replace. To unplug, push the connector slider away from the fuel injector. Then depress the tab under the slider as you pull the connector from the injector.

  • Unbolt the fuel rail using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Lift the fuel rail carefully off the intake manifold just enough to unseat the injectors from the manifold. Pull the retaining clips off the injectors you want to replace using a pair of nose pliers.

  • Rock one of the injectors you need to replace slightly from side to side as you pull it off the fuel rail. Then remove the others. Make sure the injectors have the bottom O-ring seal installed. If not, remove them from the intake manifold.

Installing the New Fuel Injectors

  • Install new top and bottom O-ring seals on the new fuel injectors. Press the injectors carefully into the fuel rail. Install the retaining clips on the fuel injectors

  • Install the fuel rail, making sure all the fuel injectors seat properly on the intake manifold.

  • Tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

  • Plug the fuel injectors' electrical connectors and push the connector slider toward the injector to lock the connector in place.

  • Install the accelerator cable, cruise control cable (if equipped), transmission cable (if equipped) and cable routing brackets, if you have a 2.5L or 4.0L engine model. Use the Phillips screwdriver, ratchet and socket.

  • Mount the cover on the fuel supply manifold using the ratchet and socket. Replace the fuel filler cap.

  • Install the air intake tube to the assembly, if you had to remove it, using the Phillips screwdriver. Connect the black battery cable using the wrench.
