How to Install Volvo Headlights

Depending on the model and year of your Volvo, the procedure to replace the headlight may vary, but the overall concept is quite similar. The following procedure explains the process of removing and replacing the headlight bulb in the 60s and 70s series of the newer Volvos. Save time and money by buying the headlight bulb(s) and installing them yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 millimeter nut driver (optional)
  • Replacement bulb
  • Replacement headlight assembly (optional)
  • Ensure the ignition switch as well as the light switch to the Volvo is off. Release the hood latch.

  • Open the hood.

  • Locate the large round plastic cover on the inside of the headlight assembly. Turn the cover counter clockwise to remove it from the assembly and expose the headlight and wire connector.

  • Remove the wire connector.

  • Press the retaining spring inward, then downward to release it from the lock clip. Swing the retaining spring outward to remove the headlight bulb.

  • Insert the new headlight into the headlight assembly being careful not to touch the glass bulb. Be sure the guide tab of the bulb is in the up position.

  • Replace the retaining spring onto the lock clip.

  • Plug the wire connector onto the new light bulb.

  • Replace the large round cover and turn clockwise to tighten.
