How to Remove the Key Switch on a Jeep Wrangler Steering Column

If it is difficult to tell what position your key is in or if you can remove the key from your Jeep Wrangler ignition while it is still running, your key switch is worn out and needs to be replaced.
Located within the steering column of your Jeep Wrangler, the key switch can be removed and replaced without having to get a new key. The most difficult part is not removing the key switch, but first removing the steering column to access the key switch.

Things You'll Need

  • Steering wheel puller
  • Key to the ignition

How to Remove the Key Switch on a Jeep Wrangler Steering Column

  • Disconnect the battery from your Jeep Wrangler by undoing the battery terminals.

  • Remove the center cap on the steering wheel using a flathead screwdriver; the center cap should pop right off.

  • Undo the bolt on the steering column using the socket set.

  • Attach the steering wheel puller to the steering wheel according to the instructions that came with it. This allows you to use the steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.

  • Once the steering wheel is removed, put the key in the key lock cylinder (ignition). Turn the key to the on position.

  • Inside the steering column at the bottom of the key switch, there is a small pin, which is called a release tang. Push in the tang and it will release the key switch so it can be safely removed.
