Installing a Fuel Pump in a Ford F350

The fuel pump for the Ford F350 is connected to the fuel level sensor and rests within the fuel tank. All F350 models over the past decade come with the pump firmly attached to this device. So installing a new fuel pump means installing a complete new pump/level sensor accessory into the fuel tank and then connecting the tank into the truck. The tank can be on either side of the rear axle. If you have removed the old fuel pump, the F350 truck is prepared for installation, with the rear side raised on jack stands, the wheel removed, the tank disassembled and the fuel system depressurized.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel pump assembly
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack
  • O-ring
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Tire iron
  • Make sure your replacement fuel pump/fuel level sensor assembly is clean, especially at the fuel inlet strainer, mounting flange and fuel tank mounting surface. Unless you are using a second-hand pump, this isn't a problem. Place a new O-ring on the assembly, and hold it in place with a thin coat of heavy grease.

  • Install the fuel pump/level sensor assembly into the fuel tank. Line up the pump with the latches that hold it in place within the tank. When the pump is properly aligned, it will snap into place.

  • Screw in the locking ring for the pump assembly to secure it in place. Tighten with a pair of channel lock pliers or a special lock ring tool that you can purchase from an auto tool supplier. If you have a steel fuel tank, the pump is bolted into place. Tighten the bolts with a wrench.

  • Raise the fuel tank into position within the truck, using the manufacturer's floor jack. The truck itself must still be raised on jack stands with the nearby rear wheel removed. Secure the tank to the chassis with its bolts and the tank straps if it uses them.

  • Connect the electrical connector on the pump assembly with a screwdriver. Connect all the fuel and EVAP lines to the tank using their quick-connect couplings. Push the two couplings together until they lock or click into place. Apply a dab of motor oil to any O-rings on the coupling. Press any locking tabs into their locked position.

  • Install the skid plate on the tank and secure its mounting nuts with the wrench. Lower and remove the floor jack holding the tank in place.

  • Attach the wheel back on the truck using the stock tire iron or one of your own, and lower the truck. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

  • Fill the tank with at least 5 gallons of fuel and pressurize the fuel system. With the fuel pump relay and fuse connected and the gas cap on, turn the ignition on for 2 seconds. Switch it off and leave it off for 10 seconds before switching it on again. Repeat this five to 10 times.
