Installing a Flywheel to a Torque Converter

  • Install the torque converter on the input shaft of the automatic transmission. The torque converter has two slots that must line up on the input shaft. The inner splines of the torque converter must align with the splines on the input shaft of the transmission. The easiest way to do this is to install the torque converter onto the input shaft of the transmission and lift it up slightly so that the shaft does not solely support it. Lift the nose of the torque converter while pushing in on the converter. If it does not slide all the way in back it out ever so little then turn it a small amount and try pushing it in again. Just keep doing this procedure until you hear it clunks in all the way.

  • When the torque converter is all the way in, the holes for the bolts in the converter should be recessed about 1 inch from the front of the bellhousing on the transmission. When the transmission is installed, if the converter is not fully installed on the input shaft of the transmission the torque converter will hit the flywheel before the bellhousing is close to the engine and the transmission will not be able to be bolted up. If the transmission is tipped forward during installation, the torque converter can slide forward and cause this situation. If this happens, the transmission must be taken down again so the torque converter can be re-installed.

  • Make sure the engine is tipped down slightly in the back and when the transmission is raised the nose is tipped up ever so slight. Install the transmission then the bolts in the bellhousing. Turn the torque converter with a screwdriver to make sure the converter turns easy enough and does not bind up. If all looks good turn the converter with the screwdriver until the holes in the flywheel and converter line up. Install the nuts and bolts through the openings provided in both the flywheel and converter. Tighten the bolts and nuts.
