A common problem with replacing the power steering pump on a GMC is getting the correct replacement from the supplier. This seems to happen 50 percent of the time--they look up the wrong year of the GMC vehicle and give you the wrong pump or they do not choose the proper engine size. Power steering pumps come with or without the reservoir and with different hose connections. They may look the same, but save yourself the aggravation of installing a pump only to find out it won't work because of a difference in the connections. The hoses have either an inverted flare or a ferrule and O-ring hose connection.
Place pan on ground under the power steering pump. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the accessory drive belt from the power steering pump. Install the power steering pulley remover over the front lip on the pulley and screw the center shaft into the pulley shaft. Hold the center bolt so it does not move. Use the large adjustable wrench to turn the large outside nut counterclockwise to pull the pulley off the shaft.
Remove the power steering hoses and let them drain into the catch pan. Remove the three 13-mm bolts in the front of the pump holding the pump to the mounting bracket. Remove the pump from the GMC vehicle.
Install the new pump with the three bolts and tighten. Put Teflon tape on the ends of the hoses and install the hoses. Install the pump pulley using the installer tool. Screw the center shaft into the pump shaft and turn the large nut clockwise pushing the pulley onto the shaft.
Install the accessory belt and tighten the tensioner so that the belt has proper tension. Fill the pump with power steering fluid. Start the car and turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several times to bleed the system of air. Check the pump for fluid and add as needed.
