How to Install an Intake Manifold

The intake manifold of an engine distributes the air/fuel mixture into the individual cylinders. Over time, the ability of the intake manifold to distribute this mixture efficiently can be seriously impaired due to a buildup of various deposits inside it. In addition, fluids that circulate though the engine can enter the manifold and end up being burned inside the cylinders if the intake manifold gaskets break down. Follow the steps bellow to install an intake manifold.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of new intake manifold gaskets.
  • Gasket sealer.
  • Torque wrench.
  • Putty knife
  • Clean all gasket surfaces with a putty knife. Carefully scrape the old gasket material off of the manifold mating surfaces to ensure that the new manifold will seal properly. Take care not to gouge these mating surfaces with the putty knife.

  • Install the new intake manifold gaskets with gasket sealer, which is readily available at most automotive supply stores. There are four gaskets here, one for each side of the manifold. The gasket sealer should be liberally applied to both sides of each gasket. Carefully rest each gasket to the engine surfaces where the old manifold gaskets were removed.

  • Slowly lower the intake manifold onto the gaskets.

  • Use a torque wrench to tighten each intake manifold bolt. The precise amount of torque to be applied varies from engine to engine, so check a repair manual for the proper setting for the specific engine that the manifold is being installed in.

  • Allow at least six hours for the gasket sealer to set.

  • Check the torque settings for the intake manifold bolts again in the same manner as described in Step 4.
