How to Replace the Throttle Body in a Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-sized sedan and is known for generous headroom, a big back seat and a huge trunk. The 2001 Sonata came as the result of four rounds of improvements, offering better engines and significant upgrades in ride quality. Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic's toolset
  • Clean shop cloths
  • Replacement gaskets
  • Torque wrench
  • Put the ignition in the off position and allow the engine to cool completely before servicing the vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Remove the engine cover and remove the throttle body electrical connector. Loosen and remove the bolts that hold the throttle body.

  • Lift out the throttle body and its gasket. Discard the gasket. Clean the mating surfaces of the throttle body thoroughly to remove any gasket material or other dirt and debris.

  • Install the throttle body with a new gasket. Set the bolts in place on the throttle body and finger tighten them.

  • Torque the bolts to 21 foot pounds. Reattach the throttle body electrical connector. Replace the engine cover.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes until it is warm. Check for optimal engine operation.
