How to Replace the Fuses in a Subaru Outback

Your 2012 Subaru Outback has two fuse panels -- one in the passenger compartment on the driver's side of the dashboard above the hood release knob and one in the engine compartment behind the battery. A fuse puller and spare fuses are in the engine compartment fuse panel cover.

  • Open the fuse panel and read the listing inside the cover to find the fuse you need. In the 2012 Subaru Outback, for example, the brake light fuse is in slot No. 8 of the passenger compartment fuse panel.

  • Pull out the fuse using your fingers or the fuse puller and check the silver wire inside. The wire in a blown fuse will be melted or broken. Push in a new fuse that has the same rating as the one you removed. The brake light example in Step 1 uses a 15A fuse.

  • Restart your vehicle and test the new fuse to make sure it works. If it blows again, there is a problem with that system that needs attention.
