How to Replace an ABS Controller in a Pontiac Grand Am

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller for the Pontiac Grand Am reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This helps prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. Your vehicle is not necessarily unsafe to drive if the ABS warning light comes on, but it may mean that you need to replace the ABS.

Things You'll Need

  • New ABS controller
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which ABS controller your Pontiac Grand Am will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Grand Am. Most versions of the Grand Am have been equipped with ABS since 1999. The ABS controller on these vehicles is a separate unit that is easily removed.

  • Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Detach the electrical connectors for the ABS controller. Remove the hex head screws that mount the ABS controller to the dash panel with a socket wrench and remove the ABS controller from the dash panel.

  • Install the new ABS controller. Ensure the three plastic grommets are properly located and align the screw holes on the ABS controller with the ones on the dash panel.

  • Attach the ABS controller to the dash panel with the hex head screws and use a torque wrench to tighten them to 17 foot pounds. Attach the electrical connectors for the ABS controller and connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

  • Start the engine and ensure the ABS light does not come on. Make sure the ABS light does not come on while driving, especially during braking.
