How to Replace an ABS Controller in a Pontiac Bonneville

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Pontiac Bonneville prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller does this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. The ABS warning light may mean you need to replace the ABS controller. However, a non-functioning ABS does not necessarily mean your vehicle is unsafe to drive.

Things You'll Need

  • New ABS controller
  • Socket wrench set
  • Tech 2 scanner
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which ABS controller your Pontiac Bonneville will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Bonneville. ABS was first offered as an option on the SE trim level in 1992.

  • Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Raise the vehicle so you can remove the left front wheel and wheelhouse extension. Wash all contaminants from around the ABS controller and rotate the connector tab for the ABS controller to the unlocked position. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ABS controller.

  • Remove the six screws that attach the ABS controller to the brake pressure modulator valve and separate the ABS controller from the modulator valve. Clean the seal surface of the modulator valve.

  • Install the ABS controller by reversing the removal steps. Use a torque wrench to tighten the ABS controller mounting screws to 28 inch pounds.

  • Program and setup the ABS controller with a Tech 2 scanner using the latest software for your vehicle. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes with the scanner.
