You should change the automatic transmission fluid at the 7,500-mile mark. After that, change the fluid every 22,500 miles if you drive the car under normal driving conditions. If you drive the Tracker under severe conditions, change the transmission fluid every 15,000 miles. The following directions cover the Geo Tracker models from 1989 through 1997.
Drive the Tracker on the highway for about 15 to 20 miles to bring the car to a normal operating temperature. Raise the vehicle and support it securely with jack stands. Make sure it's level.
Place a drain pan beneath the transmission housing and under the drain plug. Remember that some Trackers have the drain plug mounted on the side of the transmission. If this is the case, the automatic transmission fluid will likely project outward when you first remove the drain plug.
Find the fill plug and remove it and the drain plug from the transmission. You'll probably need a 3/4 inch ratchet driver or extension to remove the square receiver drain plug. Place them where they won't get dirty. Wait for the transmission fluid to stop draining, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to 200 inch pounds with torque wrench.
Fill the transmission with SAE 75W-90 hypoid gear oil until the fluid level reaches the bottom edge of the filler hole. You need a fluid pump for this step.
Replace the filler plug. Tighten it to 11 to 241 inch pounds. Be careful that you don't over tighten the plug and damage the transmission housing. Carefully remove the jack stands and return the Tracker to the ground.
