How to Remove a Broken Car Key

So your car key broke off in your car and you need to remove it. Well, before you call an expensive locksmith, you may want to give it a shot yourself. Removing a broken car key from a car door or ignition may be a little frustrating and tricky, but it can be done.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray lubricant
  • Small, thin hacksaw blade
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Spray some lubricant into the lock that the key has broken off into.

  • Carefully place the thin hacksaw or other appropriate blade with teeth into the lock with the teeth facing either up or down, depending on where the grooves on your keys are located. If the grooves on your key are located toward the top of the lock, then you would insert the blade into the lock with the teeth facing up. If the grooves on your keys are facing down in the lock, then the blade would be inserted with the teeth facing down. Place the blade into the lock on the right side of the broken key.

  • Turn the blade slightly to the left if the grooves on your key are facing upwards in the lock, or slightly to the right if the grooves of your keys are facing downward in the lock. Try to grasp the grooves on the key with the teeth on the saw blade.

  • Slowly pull the blade straight out of the lock, drawing the key out with it as you go.

  • Repeat the above steps as many times as necessary until a small part of the broken key is peeking out of the lock.

  • Use needle-nose pliers to grasp the piece of the broken key that is sticking out of the lock. Gently pull until it is completely removed.

  • Call or drive (if possible) the vehicle to a local locksmith to have the key removed if the steps listed do not work.
