How to Fix Rust Spots on a Car

Your car is your pride and joy. You wash it lovingly, you buff it gently and you weep when you see rust spots beginning to appear. Have no fear; you can remove the rust spots, save your car's paint job and get back to loving it.

Things You'll Need

  • 150-grit sandpaper
  • Painter's tape
  • Primer
  • Body filler
  • Paint
  • Use the sandpaper to smooth out the rust spots. Don't use a heavy hand. Just gently sand the rust spots with even pressure. Make sure that the spot is even and smooth when you are finished.

  • Apply body filler to any deep rust spots. You need an even surface for priming and painting, and if there is a dip or a hole, you risk the rust coming back. Body filler is available at most automotive stores and includes instructions on how to use it.

  • Use tape to block off the section that you are working on. Painter's tape is the best to use, because it is easy to remove, won't leave any residue and won't strip any paint.

  • Apply a thin coat of primer to the affected area. Once the primer dries, apply another thin coat. Repeat a third time, and allow to dry completely.

  • Paint a thin coat of paint over the primer. Let it dry. After it dries, check to see the coverage and how well it blends with the rest of the paint. If you need to add another coat, then do so, but continue to check the blending. You don't want the rust spots you fixed to be a darker color than the rest of your car.
