Where Is the Fan Relay on a 98 Ford Contour?

The cooling fans in your 1998 Ford Contour are wired to run only when the ignition is in the "Run" position. When in "Run," the fans may come on at any time, even if the engine is not running. If both the high-speed and low-speed fans don't work, then you may have a bad cooling fan fuse. Check the yellow 60A fuse in slot No.2 of the power distribution box. This fuse protects the circuits for both high and low fan speed operation. If this fuse is bad, it will prevent both cooling fans from operating.

  • Turn off the ignition switch and lift the hood. Locate the power distribution box on the driver side, between the battery and the fender. Remove the PDB lid.

  • Locate the high-speed cooling fan relay in slot No. R2. Pull the relay straight out of its socket. Plug the new high-speed relay into its socket. Locate the low-speed cooling fan relay in slot No. R5. Pull the relay out and replace it with the new low-speed relay.

  • Install the PDB cover. Close the hood. Test the fans for proper operation.
