How to Seal a Head Gasket

A properly working engine and head gasket are vital if you want to keep your vehicle running efficiently. Sometimes small leaks or cracks form in the head gasket. If the gasket has a crack or leak, specifically designed products are available to help rectify this issue and seal the gasket.

Things You'll Need

  • K&W Block Sealer or Cargo Seal-Up
  • Water
  • Antifreeze
  • Allow engine to cool down for at least 30 minutes before you attempt this procedure. Drain all of the fluid from the radiator into a leak proof receptacle. Flush the radiator with water for a few minutes to clear out any residual antifreeze from the radiator.

  • Add a bottle of K&W Block Sealer or Cargo Seal-Up into the radiator. Fill the rest of the radiator with water. Do not put any antifreeze in at this time. The sealers will not work with antifreeze present.

  • Turn your engine on and let it run for at least 5 minutes with the cabin heater on full blast. This will ensure the engine thermostat opens up and the fluid has had sufficient time to circulate through the head gasket.

  • Drive your vehicle for at least 500 miles with just the water and sealer in the engine to make sure the mixture circulates through to thoroughly seal the crack or leak. The K&W Block Sealer or Cargo Seal-Up fluid is specially designed to turn from a liquid into a glass once it is heated as it runs through the engine. Over time, it circulates through and adds layers of this glass to slowly close the crack or leak until it is sealed completely.

  • Drain all the liquid out of the radiator after 500 miles have been driven. Refill the radiator with the proper mix of water and coolant.
