What Is the Torque Pattern for the Exhaust Manifold on a 1982 Toyota 22R?

The 22R engine came in Toyota's Celica and pickup for the North American market in 1982. This 2.4-liter engine, introduced in the Toyota line the year prior, had a reputation for being durable and providing decent fuel economy, and had respectable low- to mid-range torque.

Tightening the Manifold

  • To install the exhaust manifold, tighten the nuts starting from the middle of the manifold and working your way out to the outer nuts. Tighten the nuts evenly in three stages, with the final stage ending at 29 to 36 foot-pounds. Tighten the exhaust pipe flange nuts to 25 to 32 foot-pounds.
