How to Change Tires

Your day is going so well. It's Friday and you're heading home from work, driving down the road with the windows open and the radio blaring. Then you notice the car pulling to one side of the road. Your good day is over, unless you know how to change tires. Find out in this article.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Spare tire or "donut" tire
  • Lug nut wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Jack the car up where the tire needs replacing. Use the car jack to jack the car up. Place the jack underneath a solid, fixed place underneath the car (like part of the frame). Don't try jacking the car up underneath the muffler or axle because it will damage the car. Jack the car up until the tire is still touching the ground, but still slightly able to spin with some effort.

  • Pop the hubcap off the tire with the flathead screwdriver.

  • Use the lug nut wrench to loosen the lug nuts holding the tire to the car. If help is available, have a friend hold the tire. Loosen one lug nut on one side and then loosen the one across from it next, and so on until every one is loosened. Be sure to loosen the lug nuts a little at a time for safety and in order to not damage the threads of the lug nuts.

  • Carefully remove the flat tire from its axel.

  • Position the spare tire onto the axel, and reattach the lug nuts securely.

  • Slowly and carefully let the car jack down until your vehicle is totally back on the ground.

  • Remove the jack from under the car. Store the hubcap and the flat tire in your trunk.
