How to Cut Throttle Cables

The majority of aftermarket throttle cables come at a standard length, and part of the installation process is cutting the throttle cable to length. If you do not trim the throttle cable, it can become wrapped around vital engine components. This could lead to the throttle sticking open and causing you to have an accident. How you cut the throttle cable will affect the performance of the cable, as certain methods of cutting can result in the tip of the throttle cable unwinding and becoming unusable.

Things You'll Need

  • Throttle cable
  • Permanent marker
  • Electrical tape
  • Wire cutter
  • Utility knife
  • Pull the installed throttle cable past the cable attachment on the carburetor or fuel injection.

  • Mark a spot 1/2 inch past the cable attachment point with the permanent marker.

  • Wrap electrical tape around the throttle cable, with one side of the electrical tape aligned with the mark from Step 2.

  • Place the blades of the wire cutter on the throttle cable, aligned with the side of the electrical tape set on the cut mark.

  • Cut the electrical tape with the utility knife and peel the tape from the cut throttle cable.

  • Inspect the cut to ensure that the strands of the throttle cable remained intact. Install the cut throttle cable per the manufacturer's instructions.
