How to Change the Front Headlight on a 2006 Ford Focus ZX4

The 2006 Ford Focus ZX4 uses a composite halogen headlight. These headlights last longer and burn brighter than the older sealed beam unit headlights on older vehicles. The composite headlight on the Focus ZX4 features both the high- and low-beam in the single dual filament bulb: one per driver's and passenger's side. Give yourself plenty of time and change the headlight in a well-lit area if you've never done this before.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Latex gloves
  • 9007 replacement bulb
  • Open the hood and prop it up.

  • Locate the retaining jack screw at the top center of the rear edge of the headlight assembly. Remove the jack screw with a Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Locate the two lower retaining clips located on either side of the headlight assembly at the bottom. They are parallel with the jack screw. Place a long flat head screwdriver onto the plastic clips and gently press them down to disengage them from the retaining tabs. Disengage both ends of the headlight assembly.

  • Wiggle the headlight assembly forward, being careful not to scratch the lens of the assembly nor the paint on the fender and bumper.

  • Support the headlight assembly on the edge of the bumper then remove the headlight cover plate. Press inward on the tabs to release the cover plate.

  • Disconnect the wire harness by gently lifting up on the locking tabs of the harness plug and pulling it off the headlight socket lock.

  • Turn the headlight retaining collar counterclockwise 1/3 of a turn to align the tabs and grooves of the collar and headlight assembly respectively. Pull the collar and bulb out from the back of the assembly. Discard the old bulb.

  • Put on a pair of latex gloves before handling the new 9007 replacement bulb. Insert the bulb into the retaining collar and align the tabs and grooves of the collar and assembly, then turn the collar 1/3 of a turn clockwise to lock it into place.

  • Connect the wire harness plug into the socket of the headlight. Test the headlight before reassembling the remainder of the headlight assembly. Turn the headlights off before reassembling the headlight assembly.
