How to Tune a Holley Dominator

Holley Dominators are used primarily in race cars, especially dragsters. Tuning a Holley Dominator carburetor can be a tricky process. There is no one, correct way to tune the equipment. The Holley controls how much fuel is sent to the engine so listening to how your vehicle runs and paying attention to how it handles can give you a good idea of what type of tune up you may need.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Jets
  • Determine what is wrong with the Holley carburetor. Racers often relate a bumpy ride across the finish line if there is too much fuel being sent to the engine. If there was not enough fuel in the engine during a race, drivers will often complain of a stalling or sliding feeling.

  • Remove the four screws on the side of the Holley using a flathead screwdriver. This will allow you to remove the fuel bowl from the meteoring block. Drain all the fuel out of the carburetor.

  • Pick the metoring block up and look inside. You should see the jets that fit inside. The fuel jets regulate how much fuel is pushed through the Holley and into the engine during the vehicle's operation.

  • Pry out the jets using a flathead screwdriver. Replace the jets with another size, depending on whether you want more fuel or less fuel to reach the engine. Push the jets into their slots until they click into place.

  • Place the fuel bowl and meteoring block together and secure them in place with the four original screws.
