What Is an Air Flow Sensor on a Car?

The air flow sensor of a car, sometimes called the mass air flow sensor or MAF sensor, is a part of the fuel injection system on a car. This piece measures the amount of air entering the car's engine.

Significance

  • The mass air flow sensor works in conjunction with the engine control module and oxygen sensor. Air flow sensors play an integral part in figuring out the emissions and efficiency of your car.

Identification

  • The MAF sensor is located between the air filter and engine on most vehicles.

Types

  • There are four distinct types of air flow sensors. The "hot wire" mass air flow sensor and "coldwire" mass air flow sensor look similar to each other. Vane air flow meter and Karmen vortex style air flow sensors have distinct shapes. All serve the same purpose.

Warning

  • It can be difficult to determine when your car's air flow sensor has problems. This part does not usually trigger the dashboard "check engine" light. A car with air flow sensor problems may idle poorly, stall or operate on low power.

Prevention/Solution

  • Due to the trial in diagnosing a faulty air flow sensor, it is recommended you change this part every 60,000 miles.
