How to Remove Taillight Lens on a Jeep Liberty

The rear taillight assembly comes off the Jeep as a unit, and the lens is molded to the assembly. If the lens becomes damaged, you will need to replace the entire assembly as a complete unit. The taillight assembly is secured to the rear of the Jeep with two screws and two ball studs that you can access after opening the tailgate of the Jeep. Changing the bulbs is also done by removing this assembly, as this is the only way to access them.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open the tailgate of your Jeep Liberty. Locate the two retaining screws that hold the taillight assembly into the Jeep. They are located on the inboard edge of the taillight assembly.

  • Remove the two screws using a Phillips head screwdriver. They are screwed into small plastic nuts that are pressed into the sheet metal of the quarter panel. Save the screws for later reassembly of the unit.

  • Pull out on the taillight assembly until the unit pops loose from the two ball studs that are located on the outer edge of the light. They will pop right out if you pull straight out from the quarter panel.

  • Remove the wiring harness from the rear of the assembly and remove the entire unit from the Jeep. You can now access the bulbs and remove them if necessary for replacement or to transfer them into a new unit.
