The windshield wiper motor in a Jeep Wrangler is a small electrical motor mounted inside the windshield frame. Other Jeep models have the wiper motor mounted on the firewall inside the engine bay, just below the windshield. Replacing the wiper motor on any Jeep vehicle is a simple task that most vehicle owners can easily accomplish. You just need a few tools and an hour or two to work.
Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal. Loosen the retaining bolt using a wrench; then pull the clamp off the terminal.
Separate the hard or soft top from the top of the windshield frame by pulling open the hold-down clamps with your hand.
Lay the windshield down.
Unscrew the three screws that connect the wiper motor to the windshield frame, using a Phillips screwdriver.
Separate the wiring harness from the bottom of the motor. Pull the plastic wiring connector off the motor with your hand.
Pry the drive arm off the pivot shaft, using a flat-blade screwdriver.
Pull the motor away from the windshield frame.
Pull off the steel e-clip that connects the wiper motor to the drive arm, using needle-nose pliers.
Pull the drive arm off the wiper motor.
Slide the drive arm over the stud on the bottom of the new wiper motor.
Press the steel e-clip into the groove on the stud.
Lower the wiper motor into position, making sure to thread the drive arm through the windshield frame.
Press the drive arm onto the pivot shaft, using water pump pliers.
Connect the wiring harness to the wiper motor by pushing the plastic wiring connector onto the motor.
Screw in the three screws that connect the wiper motor to the windshield frame, using a Phillips screwdriver.
Raise the windshield.
Reconnect the hard or soft top to the windshield frame and close the hold-down clamps.
Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal. Slide the clamp over the terminal; tighten the retaining bolt using a wrench.
