Procedures for Disabling Chrysler Airbags

Chrysler vehicles utilize an airbag mounted in the steering wheel to cushion the driver when the vehicle is involved in a front impact crash. Some models may also have a second airbag mounted in the dash for the front passenger. If you are doing any repair to your Chrysler vehicle that requires you to work around the front of the vehicle or the steering column, the airbag must be disarmed to avoid accidental deployment.

Disconnect the Ground Cable

  • Begin by opening the vehicle's hood and locating the battery. Remove the ground cable (black) from the battery. On top terminal batteries, loosen the retaining bolt and pull the clamp off the terminal. On side terminal batteries remove the bolt that connects the ground cable to the battery, then pull the cable away from the battery. You must secure the ground cable away from the battery so that it cannot accidentally contact the negative terminal. Do this by wrapping the ground cable clamp with electrical tape, and use a plastic wire tie to secure it away from the battery.

Allow the System Capacitor to Discharge

  • Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting the ground cable from the battery before working on the vehicle. This will allow the airbag system capacitor to completely discharge and will eliminate the risk of having the airbag accidentally discharge while you are working on the vehicle. After waiting 10 minutes you may proceed with your repair.
