Threaded rods, being made of soft steel, are easy to cut, but where possible, using a bolt is always better because of its higher tensile strength. A bolt cutter will make short work of cutting a threaded rod, but if installing or removing a nut on the rod is desired, a bolt cutter cannot be used.
Carefully measure to determine the length of rod you need. There's no going back, so be careful to not cut the rod too short.
Screw two nuts onto the rod. Position one on each side of the mark where you will cut the rod, and clamp the rod in the vise using one of these nuts. Do not grip the rod directly with the jaws of the vise because doing so will damage the threads.
Place the blade of the hacksaw between the two nuts and saw the rod off. Be careful and make the straightest cut you can.
File the ends of the cut rod to remove any burrs caused by sawing the rod.
Remove the nut from the rod by screwing it off over the new end. Screw the nut on and off the rod a few times to clean the thread and make starting the nut easier.
