How to Replace the PCV Valve in a Pontiac Grand Am

The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve enables the release of air as it passes through the engine compartments of your Pontiac Grand Am. To keep the build up of pressure under control, you need to replace the PCV valve if it breaks. The following explains how to change the PCV valve on both a four- and six-cylinder Pontiac Grand Am.

  • Locate the PCV valve on your Grand Am. You'll find the PCV valve on the right side of the front valve cover. You'll need to remove the valve in order to troubleshoot it to determine if you need a replacement. To remove, pull the PCV valve out of the cover and detach the hose.

  • Test the old PCV valve to determine if it needs replacing. Blow air through it in order to see if it is clogged. If it does not seem to ventilate, then you'll need to install a new valve.

  • Buy a new PCV valve for your Grand Am. You can buy an original equipment replacement from Car Stuff for all Pontiac Grand Am engine types made between 1994 and 2005.

  • Pop the new PCV valve into the spot of the old valve. With the correct part, it should snap right in. Take the hose and reattach it in order to complete the installation.
