How to Spot an Accelerator Pump Diaphragm

The accelerator pump diaphragm is located within your vehicle's carburetor. You should routinely inspect and perform maintenance on the carburetor and other components of the fuel system for optimal performance and to avoid accidents and costly repairs from breakdowns. But to fix it, you have to know what it looks like, so learn how to spot an accelerator pump diaphragm.

  • Locate the carburetor which can be accessed under the hood. Look carefully at the fuel system and note any damage, excessive corrosion or other problems.

  • Work your way around the carburetor and note the condition of the different components along the way. Locate the throttle linkage next to the accelerator pump diaphragm. Once you have located the pump diaphragm, inspect it for damage or corrosion.

  • Inspect the cover of the accelerator pump diaphragm for gas leaks. Replace th diaphragm if you find any. This problem is indicated by a rough start or the vehicle not starting on the first turn. This happens when the required squirt of gas can pass through the carburetor to help the starting process.

  • Purchase the appropriate replacement parts. You can also get diagrams and helpful information online at sites like Weber DGV Carb Hesititation Expose (see Resources below).
