How to Replace the Muffler on a Chrysler Town & Country

The Chrysler Town & Country is a very popular van. It contains a very durable muffler and exhaust system. However, when the muffler falls off the vehicle or shows holes or other breaks, it is time to replace it. Replacing the muffler on a Chrysler Town & Country is a very simple process.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack, old blanket, or a piece of cardboard
  • Spray lubricant
  • New muffler
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hacksaw
  • Lift your Chrysler Town & Country using a jack and jack stands, taking care to support the car so it doesn't roll back. If you do not have jack stands, you can simply place an old blanket or a large piece of cardboard on the ground under the vehicle to lie on while replacing the muffler.

  • Look over the old muffler while it is still on the vehicle. Spray the fasteners generously with a penetrating lubricant before you loosen them. The penetrating lubricant will help you remove the screws and bolts with ease. Nuts and fasteners on mufflers usually wear down because of weather conditions and aging of the muffler.

  • Purchase a muffler for the Chrysler Town & Country. There are many different mufflers available. Make sure you purchase the muffler that corresponds to the year of your vehicle.

  • Loosen the bolts that at the bottom of the muffler strap, letting the muffler hang. Using a hacksaw, saw the stock muffler completely off of the pipe. You should leave between 1 inch and 1 1/2 inches of pipe at the muffler inlet.

  • Put the muffler into place under the vehicle. Make sure the muffler inlet slips over the exhaust pipe with ease. Straighten the muffler over the pipe and then tighten the muffler clamp on the muffler inlet using a flathead screwdriver.

  • Start the Chrysler Town & Country and carefully inspect the muffler for any leaks and loud sounds. If there are loud sounds or leaks, you will need to tighten the bolts more. However, the clamps should be loose enough to allow the muffler to move a little with the movement of the car.
