If the wheel nuts are overtightened or stripped when you replace a tire, you probably don't realize the problem it creates on your wheel stud until later. Once you detect a problem and have to replace the wheel stud in the Mitsubishi Galant, it's a good idea to check all of them at the same time. It takes some knowledge, the time and the right tools to do the job.
Purchase a new stud and nut. Inspect the others on the same wheel for signs of wear if you don't know when the stud first received damage. Get more if necessary so you don't have to tear the wheel apart again. If you don't know the size, take the stud to the store with you once you remove it.
Look in the trunk for the jack. You need to get blocks before you jack up the Galant. Block the wheel diagonal to your jack placement. Jack the edge up enough to remove the tire.
Take off the tire, then the calipers and the rotor in order to access the hub in the front. If the rear brakes are drum, take off the drum. If they're disc, use the same process as you would in the front.
Line the stud up with an opening in the back so there is room to both remove and replace it. You may need to remove the hub and insert it in the vise for this step if you have no clearance.
Hit the end of the stud with a mallet to drive it through the hub and out the back. You can insert the new stud in as far as you can by hand.
Thread two wheel bolts onto the stud. As you tighten down the bolts, it pulls the stud through the hole. Watch in the back and when you see the stud seat against the back of the hub, stop.
Put all the parts back onto the vehicle wheel in the order that you removed them. Tighten the replaced the stud in your Galant.
