How to Track Onstar Cars

Vehicles have evolved over the years from fragile utilitarian contraptions into full-size creations with all of the creature comforts of home. You can now watch movies from the privacy of your own back seat and you do not have to be parked at the local drive-in movie to do it. Passengers can watch a movie as your vehicle is being driven down the highway. Your vehicle, if so equipped, can even phone the proper authorities in case you have an accident and are unable to phone for help yourself. But can your vehicle be tracked without your knowledge?

Things You'll Need

  • Onstar-equipped vehicle
  • Send a request for service. Your vehicle can be tracked and its location known only if you request this service from within your vehicle.

  • Request to find a stolen vehicle or missing person. Onstar will track your vehicle if a request has been made from the vehicle’s owner to find a stolen vehicle or to locate a missing person believed to be occupying the vehicle.

  • Send an accident response request. Your vehicle will be tracked and located if the vehicle's Onstar system detects a crash involving your vehicle.

  • Protect you in times of distress. Onstar will track your vehicle if by law it is determined necessary to protect you.

  • Troubleshoot services. Onstar will track your vehicle if it becomes necessary to troubleshoot its services or diagnose vehicle issues.
