Adding tweeters to your car audio system will enhance the range of your mobile music. The tiny speakers are placed no more than 1 foot from each front woofer in the vehicle, usually on the front doors or dashboard edges. Holes must be drilled to install the tweeters; after that, it's a matter of properly soldering the necessary wiring to your speakers' wiring diagram. It takes some finesse, but what it costs in time, it saves in money.
Remove the negative lead (red) from your car battery's negative post using a wrench.
Remove the inside panel of both front doors or your top dash panel -- depending on which location you've chosen for your tweeters. This will be different for every vehicle, but usually entails removing screws from along the door edges until the panel can be popped off.
Front woofers are usually placed on the bottom section of the door panel, with room for a tweeter hole somewhere forward and above it on the panel. On smaller panels, some people install tweeters at each end of the dashboard. Find a good location for your tweeters that will point them at the vehicle's inhabitants.
Place the door panels or dashboard flat on the ground and hold the tweeter cup exactly where you'd like it to be placed. Draw a line around the cup on each panel. Drill holes with a serrated circular drill bit (some are made to match standard tweeter sizes). Trim the edges with a utility knife. (You can use a utility knife to cut out the holes if you don't have a large-size bit connector, as long as you own a durable utility knife.)
Follow your tweeter manufacturer's instructions for the size of the hole to drill out.
Get your wiring straight. Find the main speaker wiring running through your door panel. This should be connected with your woofer. Along this line -- sometimes nearby, other times behind the stereo -- will be the external crossover box or, at least, a wiring harness with spare holes for extra components. This is connected with your front woofer and other rear speakers.
Run the two wires extending from the bottom of each tweeter through their holes in the panel and to the crossover box. Strip 1/2 inch from these wires and solder them, with speed clips if you have them, to your crossover box's input wiring. Ensure your tweeters are connected to the crossover box or you could lose subtle improvements in sound, something you're installing the tweeters to improve.
Place the tweeter cups in each door panel, fully seat them according to manufacturer's instructions, and screw them in with the provided mounting hardware. This will vary depending on the model you're installing.
Gather all loose wiring neatly with wire ties and reinstall the door or dash panels, replacing all the screws you removed in Step 2. Reconnect the negative lead to your battery, and test out your new tweeters.
