How to Install a Car Audio System in a GMC Envoy XUV

The GMC Envoy XUV is equipped with GM's Delco AM-FM stereo with built-in CD player. Envoy owners who choose to upgrade their system or replace a malfunctioning stock audio system can select from a variety of aftermarket units. You can have it professionally installed or do it yourself and save money.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-mm wrench
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Faceplate adapter
  • Wiring harness adapter
  • GM antenna adapter
  • Open the hood and detach the negative battery cable with a 10-mm wrench.

  • Pull up on the parking brake. Remove the screw at the bottom of the cup holder with a Phillips screwdriver. Open the center console storage lid and remove the two screws at the forward edge of the compartment.

  • Remove the rubber tray at the back of the storage compartment and remove the two screws underneath. Remove the two screws at the bottom of storage compartment. Remove the two screws on either side of the center console and pull the entire console toward the back of the vehicle.

  • Remove the two screws on either side of the lower center console as well as the two screws at the bottom of the stereo assembly.

  • Remove the dashboard panel that surrounds the stereo assembly and climate controls by hand and set the panel aside. Remove the two screws on either side of the factory stereo with the screwdriver. Slide the factory stereo from the dashboard and disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the outlets on the rear panel of the stereo unit.

  • Insert the faceplate adapter into the Envoy's stereo dock. Push the adapter into the dashboard dock until it snaps into place within the dash. Pull the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the back of the mounting dock to the front of the dash.

  • Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads. Insert the antenna cable lead into the GM antenna adapter.

  • Plug the wiring harness adapter connectors into the outlets on the rear panel of the new head unit. Insert the GM antenna cable adapter lead into the FM antenna input on the back of the aftermarket audio deck. Slide the unit into the dock until it snaps in place inside the faceplate adapter.

  • Replace the dashboard panels and screws in reverse order. Start with the trim panel around the stereo assembly, then the center console, and finally the panel for the cup holder.

  • Reattach the negative battery cable clamp. Tighten the bolt on the clamp with the wrench and close the hood. Test your new audio unit.
