How to Replace Front Door Speakers on a G6

The Pontiac G6 was an auto design offered by General Motors from 2003 to 2007. The G6 was equipped with many fine features, but ease of replacing door speakers was not one of them. The G6 design made it more difficult to simply replace or upgrade the car stereo door speakers. Therefore, the entire door panel, and all that entails, is necessary to simply remove the front door speakers in a G6.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdrivers
  • Torx drivers and bits
  • Drill (with screwdriver and bits)
  • Allen wrenches
  • Socket wrench set
  • Wire cutter/stripper tool
  • Panel removal tool
  • Sound absorption material
  • Electrical tape
  • Exacto knife
  • Remove the front door panel. This involves unscrewing the door lock cover, removing the window lowering mechanism and disengaging the door latch. Use the Torx screwdrivers on the handle and door latch.

  • Remove the old speaker from the door panel. A plastic ring surrounds the speaker with bolts at the top and bottom. Remove the bolts and the speaker assembly comes out. Pry the speaker loose with a putty knife or flat screwdriver since it's glued to the speaker.

  • Heat Dynamat, Accumat or other sound absorption material with a heat gun or hair dryer to make it more pliable. This makes the door frame more like a speaker cabinet.

  • Apply glue on the metal of the door frame.

  • Peel the backing from the Dynamat or Accumat, and heat the material with the heat gun or hair dryer to mold it to the metal surface.

  • Use a roller or your hands to press the material onto to better conform to the metal surface.

  • Place the speaker in the speaker cavity and screw it securely through the Dynamat or Accumat to the metal of the door.

  • Connect the positive/hot wire to the positive terminal on the back of the speaker, and do the same with the negative wire to the negative terminal on the back of the speaker.

  • Tape all exposed wires with electrical tape.

  • Re-install the door panels on the G6 doors.
