How to Replace Door Speakers in a Hyundai Sonata

A good-sounding car audio system is the sum of many parts, and one of the most important links in the chain is the car's speakers. Many factory-installed speakers, like those found in the Hyundai Sonata, are lacking in performance and quality, and replacing them with aftermarket, high-performance speakers is an excellent way to pep up the sound. If you're going to upgrade your car audio system's speakers, start with the front speakers—they provide the essential stereo imaging that makes your music sound more lifelike.

Things You'll Need

  • Panel tool (available at car audio or car parts stores)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pry off the sail panel, the small triangular plastic panel at the leading edge of the window, using a panel tool.

  • Remove two Phillips screws from the front edge of the door panel with a screwdriver.

  • Remove two Phillips screws from the bottom edge of the door panel with a screwdriver.

  • Remove two Phillips screws from the rear edge of the door panel with a screwdriver.

  • Pry off the small plastic screw cover underneath the door pull handle on the upper part of the door. Remove the screw that's underneath it.

  • Pry off the screw cover behind the door handle and then remove the exposed screw. Pull off the trim surrounding the door handle.

  • Pry out the bottom of the door panel and remove the panel from the door.

  • Remove the four Phillips screws holding the speaker in place. Pull the speaker out and unplug the wiring connector.

  • Plug your new speaker in and place it into the opening in the door. Insert the screws and tighten them to hold the speaker in place.

  • Reassemble the door by reversing the disassembly steps.
