How to Install a Tow Trailer Relay on a Nissan Titan

The 2011 Nissan Titan can tow up to 9,500 pounds when properly equipped. This is adequate for a medium- to large-size utility or camping trailer. Your Titan's specific towing capacity can be found in the owner's manual. All trailers are required by law to have taillights that contain at minimum, a set of signal, marker and brake lights. These are powered through a four-pole connection to the tow vehicle. Installing the trailer wiring relay on your Titan is a simple process requiring only a few common tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Trailer harness kit
  • Drill
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Wrench set
  • Slide under the rear of the vehicle, reach up on the right side between the bumper and the spare tire, grasp the factory-installed trailer relay and pull it down. Press the button on the side and pull off the protective end cap.

  • Connect the aftermarket trailer relay to this harness by pushing the two together.

  • Find a flat surface on the bottom of the bumper. Hold the mounting bracket on this surface, drill two holes for self-tapping screws and attach the bracket to the bumper with the screws.

  • Push the seven-pole harness through the bracket and fasten the wiring harness plug to the rear bracket plug by pushing them together.

  • Fasten the seven-pole harness to the mounting bracket with the four nuts and bolts provided. Tighten the bolts with a wrench.

  • Slide the four-pole harness into the slot on the end of the bracket. Fasten loose wires with cable ties.

  • Open the front hood and locate the fuse panel. Remove the protective cover.

  • Check the owner's manual to locate the correct positions for the three trailer relays under the fuse panel section. Insert the three relays that came with the kit in these locations.
