Installation Instructions for Firestone Airbags

Firestone's air bags, also known as air springs, are not the puffy pillows that the word "airbag" brings to mind. Instead of protecting you after an accident, Firestone air bags are more likely to help you avoid an accident altogether. Firestone air springs are installed on your car's suspension. They serve to keep your car's suspension level and thus prevent it from bottoming out. Furthermore, they help steady off-center loads and ensure a more stable ride.

  • Attach your lower bracket to the bottom of your passenger's side air spring. Align the ready-made screw holes on the bracket with the screw holes on the air spring. Secure the bracket to the air spring by screwing 3/8-inch bolts through the screw holes.

  • Place the heat shield over the muffler on the top of your passenger's side air spring. Place your upper bracket over the heat shield. Align all screw holes and secure the shield, the bracket and the air spring by screwing 3/8-inch bolts through the screw holes.

  • Use the exact same assembly process to assemble the driver's side air spring.

  • Remove the two rubber bumpers bolted to your car's frame above its rear axle. One is above the driver's side wheel. The other is above the passenger's side wheel. They can both be removed by unscrewing the 3/8-inch bolts that secure them to the frame.

  • Place both the driver's side and passenger's side air springs in the place where the rubber bumpers once were. Secure them to the frame by reattaching the 3/8-inch bolts through the upper bracket screw holes of the air spring and securing them to the car frame.

  • Attach the lower brackets to the car axle. Align the lower bracket screw holes with the screw holes of an axle strap. Wrap the axle strap around the axle, then secure it to the lower bracket with 3/8-inch bolts. Repeat this process for both the driver's side and passenger's side air springs.
