The Seat Belt Won't Retract in My Toyota Tacoma

The seat belt is undoubtedly one of the most important safety features on any car, including the Toyota Tacoma. If the seat belt stops working in your Toyota, it has likely failed to retract. This can leave it in an unsafe position. A seat belt that is not retracting will not allow you to tighten it over your body. If this is the case, you can use simple tools to remedy the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Spray lubricant
  • Remove the case from the seat belt coil. Make sure the belt is not tangled in any position, and that the spring inside is not restricted from any exterior pieces.

  • Tighten the spring using a set of pliers. Use the pliers to turn the spring in a clockwise direction. This should reel the belt into the coil.

  • Spray the coil with a spray lubricant to make sure that the parts stay well-lubricated; lubrication can dry up over time. Snap the case closed. You may have to screw it back in, or even glue it closed. Spray glue for door panels is available at most automotive stores.
