How to Install an HID Conversion Kit in a CR-V

HID stands for 'high intensity discharge' and HID lamps are much more efficient than the stock halogen lamps that are currently included with Honda CR-Vs. They are filled with xenon gas and operate with a lower power of 35-watts rather than the standard 55-watts of the halogen bulbs. Additionally, due to a highly regulated electrical system, the HID bulbs have a longer life span and perform better during nighttime conditions.

Things You'll Need

  • HID lamp kit
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Clean gloves
  • Park the vehicle, set the emergency brake, unlatch the hood and open it.

  • Remove the negative terminal of your battery.

  • Locate the two headlight lamps that are located in the bottom left and bottom right portions of the engine compartment.

  • Remove the harness that is attached to each bulb by using a flat head screwdriver to press in on the release tab.

  • Remove each bulb by rotating it out of its socket.

  • Insert the new HID bulbs into their socket by rotating them until they lock into place. It is important to use gloves during this step because any residual dirt or material on the surface of the bulb can lessen its lifespan.

  • Mount the ballasts that came with the HID kit close behind each HID lamp. The mounting method will depend on your specific kit; however most just require screwing the ballast into any open mounting point.

  • Connect each ballast to the back of each HID lamp.

  • Locate an open port in your driver's side control panel.

  • Remove the panel and install the relay for the HID lamps.

  • Connect the relay to each of the ballasts. This should mean simply plugging in the harnesses, because all of these components are part of the same kit.

  • Connect a wire from the "power in" of the relay to the negative terminal of your battery. Secure the relay to the panel with the provided attachment mount or screws.

  • Reattach the negative terminal of your battery. Make sure the headlights are functioning properly.
