How to Remove a Tumbler From an Ignition Switch

Ignition tumblers, essential features on most vehicles, allow the ignition key to start the car. If your tumbler stops working, you will have trouble starting your car and will likely not be able to use it at all. If your ignition tumbler requires replacement, you can remove it in just minutes from your car's driver's seat using your ignition key and only a paper clip.

  • Enter your car with your ignition key and a straightened paper clip.

  • Insert your key into the car's ignition slot, and insert the paper clip into the small slot to the left of the key slot. Insert both the key and the paper clip all the way.

  • Turn your key to the "ACC" position, and pull on both the key and the paper clip to remove the ignition cylinder.

  • Set down the removed tumbler, and return the key to the "Off" position. Remove the paperclip, then remove the ignition key.
