How to Install a MagnaFlow Muffler

If the muffler on your vehicle is broken or old, you can replace it with an aftermarket MagnaFlow muffler. MagnaFlow offers many universal-fit mufflers for numerous vehicle types, including trucks, SUVs and sedans. The muffler dampens the noise emitted by the exhaust system. It fits between the catalytic converter pipe and the exhaust tail pipe. Although the exact method for installing a MagnaFlow muffler depends on the make and model vehicle you have, the procedure is similar for most vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set
  • Rotary cutting tool, sawzall or torch welder
  • Motor oil or grease
  • Safety goggles
  • Vehicle jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • Raise the rear end of your vehicle with a jack. Slide both jack stands below the vehicle. Lower the chassis onto the jack stands.

  • Loosen the bolts securing the U-bracket that joins the muffler to the catalytic converter exhaust pipe, using your socket wrench. Pull off the U-bracket. If the bolts and U-bracket are rusted and won't come off, cut through the U-bracket with a metal-cutting rotary tool, a sawzall or a torch welder. Wear safety goggles while cutting to protect your eyes. Do not cut beyond the bracket or you may slice through the catalytic converter pipe. Pull off the U-bracket when it comes loose.

  • Repeat Step 2 to remove the U-bracket that secures the male end of the muffler to the female end of the exhaust pipe.

  • Look for a small tabbed collar around the muffler's handle bracket that is fitted into the chassis stay. Press in the tab on the collar. Pull the collar off the handle bracket. Pull the muffler out of the chassis and set it aside.

  • Set the MagnaFlow muffler's handle bracket into the chassis stay where the old muffler was set. Clamp the collar around the handle bracket.

  • Grease the male end of the catalytic convertor pipe with motor oil. Slide the U-bracket removed earlier or a new U-bracket that comes with the MagnaFlow muffler over the catalytic convertor pipe. Wiggle the pipe into the female end of the MagnaFlow muffler. Secure the fitting by sliding the U-bracket over the point where the two joints overlap. Tighten the bolts on the U-bracket to secure it in place.

  • Grease the male end of the MagnaFlow muffler with motor oil. Slide the U-bracket removed earlier or a new U-bracket over the exhaust tail pipe. Insert the MagnaFlow muffler's male end into the female end of the exhaust tail pipe. Secure the fitting in place by tightening the U-bracket over the portion where the two pipes overlap.
