How to Hook Up a Noise Filter

The electrical components in cars are typically noisy. A noise filter is a must if you are looking to reduce the annoying sounds that come from your car's electronic equipment. While it won't necessarily remove all the noise that comes from the car, it will cut down the sound by a lot. This article outlines the steps necessary to install a noise filter in a car.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutter
  • Noise filter
  • Electrical tape
  • Remove the radio from your car. Uninstalling the component varies depending on your car's design, brand or model. Search the net for how to remove the radio from your specific type of car.

  • Cut the red power wire that leads to the radio.

  • Attach the blue wire of your noise filter to a part of the red power wire that you cut. Twist the two wires together and secure with electrical tape.

  • Connect the red wire of the noise filter to the same red wire of the car.

  • Connect the end of the wire that you cut to a ground component of the car. This can be any bolt included or part of the car's metal surface. If the bolt is loosened, slide the wire under the bolt, then tightly secure the bolt onto the wire.

  • Test the radio for any interference. If you still hear noise, check the connections you just made.
