How to Remove the Key From a PT Cruiser

All kinds of different vehicles can have problems with keys, and the PT Cruiser is no exception. Your key can get stuck in the ignition of your vehicle for a number of different reasons, and it may not be immediately apparent why the key has gotten stuck. In just a few minutes, you can have your PT Cruiser key out of the ignition switch just by trying some simple solutions.

Things You'll Need

  • Lubricant, such as WD-40
  • Ice
  • Turn the key all the way to the left and then to the right. Sometimes turning the key to extreme positions in the ignition switch will loosen it.

  • Jiggle the key and attempt to remove it while turning the steering wheel. Make sure your PT Cruiser is in Park with the parking brake engaged.

  • Spray some lubricant like WD-40 onto the ignition cylinder or door lock and then attempt to pull the key out.

  • Apply a bag of ice to the key if there is a part of the metal exposed. This will cause the metal to contract. The key might have gotten hot and expanded causing it to get stuck. Hold the ice on the key for up to ten minutes, then try to remove the key.
