How to Stop a Car Stereo from Skipping

Listening to music while driving can be a great way to pass the time, but only if the music coming out of the car stereo isn't skipping every couple of seconds. There can be any number of reasons a car stereo skips. Some are easy fixes, while others might require a entirely new car stereo.

  • Examine the CD being played in the car stereo for any scratches, scuffs or other damage marks. A skipping car stereo is often caused by a scratched CD. If the CD is scratched, obtain a new copy or attempt to clean it with cleaning solvent and a dry cotton cloth.

  • Check the road conditions. If the CD is in good condition and the skipping persists, it could be caused by an excessively rough road. The jostling created by the road surface might be enough to make the CD laser move around, which would also result in skipping. Consider opting for a smoother route if possible.

  • Take the car stereo to a repair shop. If the skipping continues with a clean CD and on a smooth road, it the stereo itself might be damaged and in need of repair or replacement. The repair work is best handled by professionals.
