How to Move Your Car Battery to the Trunk

Moving the battery of a car to the trunk helps to more evenly distribute weight in a car where handling matters. While it may not seem like much, subtracting the weight from the front of the car, and adding it to the back, creates a weight swing that is double that of the battery. This can help a car handle in a more balanced fashion. To complete this project, you need basic hand tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery relocation kit
  • Drill with hole saw
  • Hand tools (screwdrivers and small socket set or wrenches)
  • Test-fit the battery in the trunk, and then mount the bracket that came with the relocation kit. This will require that you drill the bolts into the bottom of the trunk to secure the bracket.

  • Drill cable holes on either side of the bracket and run the positive and negative cables along the bottom of the car and attach it to the starter. Affix the cables securely with the clamps that come with the kit. Depending on the make and model of the car, you may need to put your car on a lift to get under it and perform this step.

  • Run a grounding wire from any bolt on the engine, to any bolt on the chassis. Run the wire in the trunk from any bolt on the body of the car, to near-enough to attach to the negative battery node.

  • Place the battery in the mounting bracket, and latch it in place. Attach the positive and negative cables to their corresponding nodes on the battery, and then the grounding cable to the negative node.
