How to Remove VHT Nite-Shades

Tinted taillights and headlights have been popular for many years, and products such as VHT's Nite-Shades paint have made the installation of such products easier. But sometimes the color is too dark, or maybe your local law enforcement agency isn't OK with the darker tint, and the paint has to come off. Luckily, it's possible to remove VHT Nite-Shades without too much trouble, and get back on the straight and narrow.

Things You'll Need

  • 1000, 1200 & 2000-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Bucket
  • Access to a hose
  • Paint reducer
  • Soft sanding block
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic polish
  • Wax applicator
  • Tear a paper towel off the roll and pour some paint reducer onto the towel.

  • Rub the paint reducer onto the taillight or headlight in a circular motion. This may take all the paint off in one step, but it may not. If it does, move on to the plastic polishing stage. If not, follow on.

  • Fill up the bucket halfway with water, using a hose.

  • Place the sandpaper in the bucket to let it soften up. This helps the paper become easier to work with.

  • Wrap the 1000-grit sandpaper around the soft block and start to sand down the paint off the taillight. You may have to change the paper if it gets clogged up, but use a hose to keep the taillight and sandpaper wet.

  • Progress to the 1200-grit sandpaper once the tint is lightened up sufficiently. Work out the light scratches from the 1000-grit.

  • Wrap the 2000-grit sandpaper around the soft block and sand the taillight again, getting the sanding scratches out of the taillight.

  • Apply the plastic polish to the wax applicator and polish the taillight in a circular motion. At this point you're putting the finishing shine onto the lens and restoring it to its original luster.
